The Covid

Scott Whitby, 2020

The COVID came by

Spread like a flame

Trump said "It's China"

Not biology to blame

Kids home from college

They do what they should

When I was nineteen

There's no way that I could

Stay home every day

Nowhere to meet

Friends are all scared

Can't go out to eat

My barn has a new roof

I learned all the birds' songs

I made a better flyswatter

Atoned for my wrongs

I rekindled old friends

One almost died

Told him I'd prayed

And told him I'd cried

I grew a big garden

I read books I'd forgot

Drank enough whisky

To make me a sot

False positives galore

I met with the mayor

Statistics don't matter

They're less than a prayer

Now it's political

And pundits galore

It's CNN and Fox News

We're too simple, they ignore

Everyone is so fussy

Just sick of it all

Why wear a mask?

That's Freedom recalled!

Or so they say

It's a hoax they gloat

They'll figure it out when

there's a tube in the throat

When will it end?

No way to know how

Why does it matter?

It don't matter now

To a corpse it don't matter

They no longer ask it

Did it end? Did it matter?

They call from their casket
