When DeWitt was a little boy
He had some big ideas
Gonna be an astronaut
And a brain surgeon for kids
His daddy was so proud of him
Said he'll be something when he's old
That he was fast and smart and strong
DeWitt took those words as gold
It was only few years later
When he was just thirteen
He started smoking cigarettes
And got his first taste of weed
Daddy said boys are boys
Then looked the other way
Said he's gonna be a millionaire
That all of you will pay
When he finally finished school
With a note of participation
Got a job pumping gas
At the Exxon service station
Daddy took his paycheck
After he lost the farm
That's when DeWitt figured it out
Went and stole a fast red car
Not two miles down the road
There was blue lights on his tail
If he slowed down now
He'd surely go to jail
He remembered not long ago
His daddy taught him how to drive
Daddy was so proud back then
Said he drove like no one alive
About that time he hit a little girl
The trial was short but it was fair
Six years later after his last meal
Slept good then walked to the chair
Then a preacher asked for final words
I'll be Heaven by end of the day
Come on up and I'll show y'all around
Daddy sat and stared, nothing to say
C
DeWitt was a little boy
Gonna be a great big deal
Rock and roll or baseball star
Life was his to steal
Mama knew better but didn't say
It wouldn't do any good
Daddy lived his life thru DeWitt
Already failed fast as he could
